Development of the Accessories Industry Perceived Behind the “Phenomenon”

      Number of visits: Date:Jul 16,2008

At present, 60% of zippers in the world are “made in China”; high-quality apparels of famous brands are starting to use domestically made linings in large quantities; most of the button factories in many developed countries have been basically closed, and the production capacity has been largely transferred to our country. All kinds of phenomena indicate that the domestic garment accessory industry is continuously developing, which is an undoubted fact. However, in spite of the favorable situation, some phenomena are still worth considering, from which we can see that the space for the development of the garment accessory industry remains large. In the last issue of the serial reports “Focus on Accessories”, we would attempt to interpret such phenomena.

      Phenomenon I: price disparity

Among the linings produced by the same interlining factory, the cheapest one costs 0.1 yuan per meter, while the most expensive one costs 17 yuan per meter; among the zippers produced by the same zipper factory, the lowest price is 0.2-0.3 yuan, while the highest price is over 10 yuan ... Such disparity in prices is quite common among the products in one same accessory company. The reporter cannot help but have a question on such a phenomenon: why there are such large gaps between the products in the same company? The answer from the people in charge in the accessories companies is both simple and complex: the “cost”. The seemingly simple word contains multiple aspects, such as materials, equipment, technology, design, handcraft...

In fact, in contrast to the demand for apparel brands, the domestic companies specializing in the production of high-end accessories are rare. Most clothing companies hope to buy high-end materials domestically, which are not only convenient, but also cheaper than the imported products. Many accessory companies consider that the production and operation of high-end accessories are quite risky. It is said that although the high-quality accessories are evidently superior to other similar products in terms of physical and chemical properties and applying performance, they are more expensive than the average products by 4 to 5 times because of the high cost of raw materials and manufacturing process complexity, and over 10 times higher than those of the low-end products. Therefore, the domestic sales of these products are not large, and they are used only by a few high-end international clothing brands.

Interpretation: the saturation of low-end product market is bound to transfer the market to high-end products. In order to develop, it is necessary to take some risks. The companies that dare not take the first step will be eliminated from the market sooner or later.

      Phenomenon II: domestic issues

Many textile enterprises are gradually transferred from export to domestic sales; however, in the accessories industry there are still some problems that hinder the pace of the transfer. An insider stated one of the reasons to the reporter: first of all, the domestic market is still not standardized enough, where vicious competitions and price battles still remain, which put the companies producing high quality accessories into a disadvantageous situation; in addition, part of the downstream companies default payments, and some of them are even worse. All these factors result in the accessories companies shrinking back at the sight of the domestic market.

On the one hand, the domestic garment brand companies hope that high-end accessory companies can offer high-end accessory products; on the other hand, accessory companies also hope that domestic market is better regulated, and that the upstream and downstream enterprises can establish equal partnership with them in accordance with industry rules.

The key of the question does not lie in which party it is, but rather in communication and cooperation between the two parties. As seen in a piece of new spotted by the reporters a few days ago, part of the exported children's clothing were recalled due to their unacceptable accessories, and the inspection agency requested the garment companies using accessories that meets the requirements of exported products. However, if domestic companies which do well in the production of accessories do not want to supply the domestic market for various reasons, how should the problem be solved? This requires the joint efforts of the upstream and downstream companies, rather than their separate complaints.

Interpretation: Of course, not all companies are like this, for there are still many companies are able to maintain stable and long-term cooperation through effective and sound communication. A standardized and reasonable environment has to be co-created by both upstream and downstream companies in the industry.

Phenomenon III: no word is uttered without mentioning environmental protection

Among the accessory companies that the reporter had contact with, “environmental protection” has become a word on the tip of their tongues, because the accessories industry cannot develop without the development of the apparel industry. With the ever increasing living standards and cultural tastes, new changes have also taken place in the concepts of clothing, from the traditional focus on sturdy and warming functions to the modern concepts of advocating fashion, freedom, sports and leisure, “green products”, “eco-textiles” and other concepts that are deeply rooted in the minds of people. These changes will definitely demand the accessory industry to develop toward the direction of high-tech, function, environmental protection, information, and so on while meeting the requirements of garment accessories.

In addition, accessories also bear more and heavier “duties”. When a small piece of accessory is substandard, what is involved is not only the entire garment but also the brand. Therefore, from whichever perspective, such aspects of accessories as health, safety, and environmental protection are both imperative and urgent.

Although the content of heavy metals and free formaldehyde is above standards to different degrees in the products of some accessory companies, but more and more companies have already prioritized this task.

Interpretation: more and more incidents involving substandard accessories affecting garments have taken place, which indicates that it is particularly important to ensure environmental protection and product safety for accessories characteristic of abundant raw materials and diversified subsequent processing.
